A joint venture (JV) between Morgan Sindall and Grontmij have won the Institution of Civil Engineers Yorkshire and Humber Centenary Award for their £26 million Scarborough Revised Bathing Water Directive scheme.

The venture involved the construction of a one megawatt UV system with 16,000m3 of additional storm water storage over three locations: Scarborough Waste Water Treatment Works, Toll House Pumping Station and Wheatcroft Sewage Pumping Station.

Toll House Pumping Station required a new 20 metre diameter, 35 metre deep storage shaft, whilst diversion and reconnection tunnels were built between the existing sewer at the station and the new Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO).

It is understood a second CSO was built with 1.5 metre and 2.4 metre diameter outlets, whilst two new pumping stations were constructed at Toll House and Scalby Mills to accommodate the increased water flows.

Overall, the new pumping stations will transfer up to 6,500 litres of waste water per second.
