Wakefield Council has approved planning permission for the development of a new sports stadium in Castleford.
The stadium is expected to be used by Castleford Tigers, as part of a mixed-use development in an area known as the Five Towns Park bounded by Park Road, M62, Stainburn Avenue and Spittal Hardwick Lane.
The application will now be referred to the Secretary of State who will make the final decision.
The application includes a country park, shops and restaurants and new road layouts.
The meeting also agreed two planning applications to extend the Asda supermarket at Leeds Road, Glasshoughton, with a mezzanine floor and bigger sales space. The plans include a wider site access, new pedestrian crossing and extra car parking.
However, a full planning application to build a new Sainsbury's store on the site of B&Q at Glasshoughton was recommended for refusal on the grounds of it having a significant adverse impact on Pontefract and Castleford town centres and local roads and being contrary to the Council's Local Development Framework.
As Sainsbury's has submitted an appeal against non-determination to the Planning Inspectorate, today councillors could not make a final decision. The outcome of the appeal is awaited.
A further application for a new Aldi supermarket at Park Road was deferred to allow time to consider additional information submitted by the applicant.
