Many homeowners and business owners choose tarmacadam surfacing for their driveways. There is no doubting its durability as a driveway surface however; temperature fluctuations caused by the change in weather can actually cause the surface to deteriorate.
Sometimes hairline cracks can appear in the tarmacadam surface and although they may seem like very minor imperfections to the surface, if they are left unattended these small cracks can develop into much bigger cracks which then will cause an uneven driveway surface which isn’t ideal.
As with the changes in the weather, water can infill the cracks, freeze and expand opening them even more and also water can even sometimes penetrate through to the sub-base undermining it, this in turn can cause the surface to cave in and a pothole will be created.
Unfortunately the tarmac surface can also be under attack from weeds which could force their way up through the surface and in turn cause cracking to the surface. It is important that any weeds, seeds or leaf debris are removed from the surface either by brushing or power washing.
To maintain your driveway you firstly should give the tarmacadam surface a visual inspection, if there are any hairline cracks then the driveway could be treated using a sealer product. Larger cracks which you can see should be cleaned out properly and filled with a crack filler; for actual holes and depressions these should be cleaned out and then filled with an asphalt patch.
All of the above are available from most hardware/DIY Stores.
As with any driveway surfaces sometimes the condition of them simply deteriorates so much and there is only so much you can do in the way of repairs. In major cases it is necessary to have a new tarmacadam driveway installed.
DCM Surfaces has recently purchased tarmacking company, H Compsty & Sons Ltd and so now we offer full tarmacadam surfacing in house and under one roof. We can replace any existing tarmacadam driveway with little fuss or alternatively we can install a new tarmac driveway.
