UCATT Hits Out Over Anti-Union Attitudes At Waste To Energy Site

A construction union has slammed anti-union attitudes at the £250 million waste to energy construction site being built at Wilton by SITA SEMBCORP UK.

UCATT Union officials said when they tried to get into the site to speak to the workers the management on the site were "extremely hostile" to them, and access to the site is "virtually impossible".

Denis Doody, Regional Secretary for UCATT Northern, said: "Management on the site have been extremely hostile to UCATT. Officials have tried to gain normal access to the workplace especially the canteen, to speak to workers and that has been made virtually impossible. It appears as though management has something to hide."

Given the lack of access and the failure of the company to enter into any kind of dialogue, the union finds claims made by the company that they are paying "the UCATT rate", particularly distasteful.

Mr Doody added: "These claims are offensive there is no such thing as the UCATT rate, the company has never consulted us about pay and we have absolutely no idea what rates are being paid on the site. It is essential to ensure that workers are treated well, safety is first class and that everything is transparent, that all relevant unions are given proper access by SITA to this site."
