Phoenix Community Housing is to build its first ever housing development in Lewisham.

The firm will construct 60 new 'extra care' homes which will enable more older people to live independently, with a changing package of support as their needs charge.

The development next to Hazelhurst Court SE6 will help plug a shortfall of extra care accommodation in Lewisham and will offer a range of community facilities for use by residents in the area.

Chief Executive, Jim Ripley, said: "We've worked very hard in our first years to bring thousands of homes up to a decent standard after decades of under-investment.

"We're delighted that we can move onto constructing new homes in our area and start making our contribution to addressing the desperate shortage of housing in Lewisham, London and the UK as a whole."

The plans, made possible by a successful funding bid to the Mayor of London in 2013 and funding from the London Borough of Lewisham, were refined following a number of consultation events with residents from Hazelhurst Court and other neighbours in the area.

The scheme has been designed by architects Levitt Bernstein.
