Call For Underpaid Construction Workers To Contact UCATT

Construction union UCATT is calling on underpaid workers to contact them after 37 firms were named, shamed and fined for paying workers below the minimum wage.

Two construction firms in Scotland were on the list.

Wood Joiners & Builders Ltd, Edinburgh, neglected to pay £3,373.19 to four workers and Building Projects Ltd, Dundee, neglected to pay £2,345.85 to three workers.

Harry Frew, Regional Secretary for UCATT Scotland, said: "It is outrageous that construction companies are flouting minimum wage laws. Construction is a physical, highly skilled industry and wage rates should be far in excess of the minimum wage."

Industry minimum rates which are agreed between unions and employers are currently £8.27 an hour for general operatives (labourers), rising to the full craft rate of £11 an hour (bricklayers, carpenters).
