Planning permission has been approved for a new £2.6 million pedestrian and cycle bridge in Carlisle.
The bridge, to connect Currock and Denton Holme, is scheduled to be open in spring 2016 after work begins this summer.
The new bridge is being funded with national money given by the Department for Transport to Cumbria. The Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership has recognised Currock Bridge as one of the county's priority transport projects.
The development will provide a wider, less-enclosed, step-free route that allows for more inclusive access between the two communities. It is better for cyclists, wheelchair users, prams, mobility vehicles as well as pedestrians.
The bridge will replace an existing footbridge which is part of a pedestrian route over the railway that links Lund Crescent with Boustead's Grassing.
