Construction firm Interserve has won an 'Energy Excellence' award for its work on the Defence Infrastructure Organisation's (DIO) Energy Spend to Save Programme.

The annual Energy Institute (EI) Awards recognise individuals and organisations in the global energy industry for setting new standards of excellence and innovation in their daily activities.

DIO established the three-year Energy Spend to Save Programme in 2011 to reduce carbon emissions from defence estate activities by 25%. It comprised of a £108m investment over 1,400 energy efficiency projects across 223 defence sites.

Peter Smith, energy and sustainability director at Interserve, said: "It costs around one million a day to heat, light and power the defence estate, so it has been very worthwhile to work on a programme that has already delivered significant cost savings and carbon reductions.

"This recognition from the Energy Institute is testament to the strong relationship Interserve holds with the DIO and our suppliers and the sustained value that is delivered through true collaboration."
