Carillion has pledged to create 5,000 apprenticeships over the next five years.
The apprenticeships will be across the business with roles in construction, infrastructure and support services sectors.
The apprenticeship plan was announced during a visit to the Carillion Training Services centre in Middlesbrough, by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.
The Chancellor said: "Since 2010, 2 million people have taken up an apprenticeship and it is part of our long-term economic plan to boost the number of apprentices still further. When a business is giving a young person a chance in life, we are very clear that government must support them fully."
