A pledge for £300 million has been signed by councils whose residents and businesses were severely affected by flooding.

Surrey, Richmond, Windsor and Maidenhead, Kingston, Elmbridge, Spelthorne and Runnymede councils signed the agreement for the government alongside Thames Water, the Regional Flood and Coastal Committee and the Environment Agency to push for the River Thames Scheme.

Chancellor George Osborne is expected to make an announcement about flood defence funding in the Autumn Statement on 3rd December.

Surrey leader David Hodge said: "Our priority is to identify the fastest sound planning route for a scheme of national importance so we can ensure the many thousands of homes and businesses along the Thames between Datchet and Teddington are given greater protection."
