Proposals to transform Cardiff city centre have been unveiled.

The development, which will be known as the Capital Square development, is a multi-million pound renovation scheme for the city. The main focus of the development will be a new 150,000 sq ft headquarters for BBC Wales; it is expected to transfer to the site of the current bus station in 2018.

Subject to planning permission, construction will start in summer 2015.

Elsewhere, a new walkway from Cardiff Central Station to the Millennium Stadium will be constructed and known as the 'Millennium Walkway'. The route to the stadium has been designed to cope with significant numbers of people, for example when rugby international matches are held at the venue.

New office space will also be created at Wood Street, with the designs including space to accommodate a metro. A 200-bedroom hotel as well as 450 private flats and new student accommodation could also be built in the city.

The scheme is being delivered by Rightacres Property.

Paul McCarthy, Chief Executive, is quoted as saying: "People have talked for many years about the regeneration of Central Square but this time it is happening. Central Square will present visitors arriving in the City with a first impression that the Capital City deserves."
