Two out of five construction apprentices are being paid below the minimum wage, according to construction union UCATT.

The union is highlighting the exploitation and mistreatment of apprentices and young workers throughout November, which the TUC have designated as young workers month.

It has also been revealed that the number of young workers on zero hours contract is rising.

UCATT officials frequently assist apprentices and young workers who have been exploited or mistreated in the workplace.

Steve Murphy, General Secretary of UCATT, said: "Too often apprentices are mistreated and exploited in construction. Employers often think apprentices are cheap short-term labour, rather than a long-term asset. It is essential that young construction workers join UCATT as this is the best way to protect themselves."
