Derbyshire County Council is to discuss building two new primary schools in the area.

The new schools, in Chellaston Fields and Hilton, would be built on land provided by the housing developers.

The council is to discuss the plans on Tuesday, 21st October.

The funding for the building work would come from developers, with running costs in the first few years paid by the council.

Both primary schools would have to be either an academy or a free school, which are funded directly by the Government instead of the local education authority.

Councillor Kevin Gillott said: "This would not be our first choice, but we have no alternative other than to create these schools as academies.

"And while whoever is chosen needs to be on the Government-approved list of sponsors, we will be designing the process and criteria to decide which sponsor would be the best for the local community and work with other schools in the area.

"We will have some influence in the process to help ensure anyone selected will help local children get an education that helps them achieve their full potential."
