Work has began on redeveloping the Archaeological Way in Shirebrook and Scarcliffe, Derbyshire.
Work to link the Langwith branch line to Poulter Country Park began on Tuesday to create a three metre wide multi-user trail and install a bridge over the A632 at Langwith.
The link will form part of the Archaeological Way, an 11-mile multi-user trail between Pleasley Pit Country Park and Creswell Crags.
The Archeological Way secured £1.9 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2011 to deliver a five year plan of environmental and community projects.
