There has been a sharp rise in construction deaths in the North West, according to new analysis by UCATT.

Five construction fatalities in the region in 2013/14 compared to two deaths in 2012/13.

In total 42 construction workers were killed at work in 2013/14 an increase of three on 2012/13 when there were 39 construction deaths. Construction is the most dangerous industry in the UK, 32 per cent of all workplace deaths occurred in the construction industry in 2013/14.

Andy Fisher, Regional Secretary for UCATT North West, said: "Each of these deaths is an individual tragedy. It is essential that the construction industry as a whole needs to be working far harder to reduce deaths and injuries. For every fatality there are also many serious injuries."
