The senior directors of three of the UK's largest construction companies have apologised for the "blacklisting" of employees.

Balfour Beatty, Laing O' Rourke and Vinci Construction issued the apology while appearing before the Scottish Affairs committee, which is investigating the blacklisting controversy.

It is understood that the committee has confirmed that the three firms all used the the Consulting Association, which had collated information on thousands of workers, many of whom were said to have been blacklisted by building firms over their trade union links and health and safety concerns.

The company ceased operations in 2009 following a raid by the Information Commissioner's Office.
