Yorkshire Housing has unveiled 30 brand new affordable homes at the Gateway, off Sheerien Close, in Athersley Barnsley.

The new scheme follows on from the award-winning multi-million pound regeneration project at New Lodge, which completed last year.

The Gateway is a £3.2m development of 19 two-, and 11 three-bedroom homes which are available for social rent. The new homes were built on the site of a derelict school.

Yorkshire Housing Development Project Manager Linda Gray said: "Over several years Yorkshire Housing worked with in partnership with, Keepmoat, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Berneslai Homes to transform the New Lodge area into a desirable place to live where there is a strong sense of community. We are really pleased to be able to unveil another development of high-quality homes in the area, building on what we have already done."

The new homes were part-funded by a £600,000 Homes and Communities Agency grant and are built to Code Three Sustainable homes standard helping keep customer's energy bills down.

Throughout the build Yorkshire Housing worked with the local community, including offering local school children the chance to look around the site and running a competition for them to predict what the new homes would look like.

The homes were built by Castleford-based Strategic Team Group who used local contractors to keep money from the development in the area.
