Morgan Sindall has won a £1.8million contract to construct a new respite centre in Basingstoke for people with physical and learning disabilities.

The project, for Hampshire County Council, is already underway and comprises the construction of a new one-storey six bed facility for people in need of respite care. The residential building on Warwick Road in Winklebury will provide planned short term breaks for adults with physical and learning disabilities in order to support their families and carers.

Morgan Sindall is also undertaking external landscaping in order to ensure the building is fully accessible for people using the centre, creating a relaxing outdoor environment for guests and visitors to enjoy. The facility will also include a lounge area and kitchen and will be fitted with lifting facilities and hoists.

Hampshire County Council Executive Member for Adult Services and Public Health, Cllr Liz Fairhurst, said: "The new respite centre is part of a number of changes being made to improve services for people with learning disabilities. By developing this new facility we can offer better residential respite for those with complex needs to complement the range of community respite services available for people who are less disabled. Throughout the process we have worked with people who use our services to ensure that the new building will meet their needs and be an environment they will be happy in."
