Carillion's One St Peter's Square project in Manchester has won the construction industry's prestigious 'Most Considerate Site' award.

The 13-storey office and retail development in the heart of the city was named the best in the country in the awards run by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). They beat off competition from more than 8,000 sites.

CCS is a national initiative to improve the image of the construction industry. Construction sites and companies register with the scheme and are monitored against a Code of Considerate Practice. The scheme looks at what a site has done to be more considerate towards local neighbours, the public, the workforce and the environment.

A small number of projects receive Gold Awards with one then being selected for the accolade of being named Most Considerate Site.

The team working on One St Peter's Square was praised for its involvement with the local community, which was described as "exceptional". This included working with local charities to help long-term unemployed people into work, creating 61 apprenticeships and supporting the local Chinese community.

The site's environmental initiatives were also highlighted particularly the noise and dust monitoring, car sharing scheme for the staff on site and a programme to recycle 100 per cent of the waste. The project was also praised for the emphasis it placed on safety.
