Ash Court Receives Regional Architecture Award

A building constructed by Balfour Beatty has been recognised by the leading association of British architects for its "thoughtful approach" in delivering "one of the most energy efficient student accommodation buildings in the UK".

Ash Court at Girton College in Cambridge received both a regional and a specialist award at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Awards in the East of England.

The new £6.8m development is an extension to the existing Grade II listed college buildings within the University of Cambridge and comprises 50 en-suite bedrooms and a fitness suite.

Sustainable features include a low air leakage rating and 50% of the extension's energy is generated through renewable sources. Balfour Beatty has placed sensors on the windows which automatically disable the heating when air quality is satisfactory, preventing excessive heat loss when windows are left open and discouraging students to leave windows open during cold weather.

Deborah Lowther, Bursar at Girton College, said: "The College is delighted that the project has received this award. Our challenge was to create a modern, energy efficient building which also complemented and enhanced the historic buildings around it.

"In Ash Court we have a building which very elegantly resolves the tensions between these two objectives. We are very grateful to the Balfour Beatty team who has made this possible."
