A special ceremony marked a milestone at Mildenhall's brand-new community centre.

Representatives from the partners behind the scheme – Orbit Homes, Forest Heath District Council, Keystone Development Trust and developer Lovell – helped put some of the first bricks into place.

The event celebrated the start of the centre's brickwork phase by Lovell which is building the community centre and 20 new homes on the site of the former St John's community centre which was demolished at the end of last year.

The £2.7 million scheme will create 18 affordable rented homes for Orbit East and the new community centre which will be owned and managed by Keystone Development Trust. Forest Heath District Council transferred the land to Orbit and contributed a £445,000 grant to enable the redevelopment to go ahead.

The scheme will also create two additional houses which will be owned and rented out by Keystone – at market rent – with the income helping fund the new centre.

After carrying out the demolition of the St John's community centre at the end of 2013, the Lovell team began work on the community centre and the new housing in January. The new community centre is set to be handed over in autumn 2014 with the new housing due for completion by the end of the year.
