Construction union UCATT have welcomed an Early Day Motion tabled by MPs which places more pressure on the Qatari Government to end the abuse and exploitation of migrant construction workers in their country.
The EDM (number 1244) has been tabled by Chris Williamson MP and Stephen Hepburn MP who both accompanied UCATT on their fact finding mission to Qatar last week.
The EDM highlights the abuses suffered by migrant construction workers and calls on FIFA to put Qatar on notice that they have 12 months to stop the exploitation of migrant workers.
This would entail the abolition of the kafala system, ensuring all migrant workers are covered by the standards in Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Workers Charter and to allow the workers to elect their own site committees and representatives.
Steve Murphy General Secretary of UCATT, said: "Migrant construction workers in Qatar are being disgracefully treated and are literally being worked to death. It is incumbent on Parliament and our Government to apply the maximum pressure to end this appalling abuse."
