Following a competitive tender process, North Midland Construction PLC has been appointed to carry out the work to improve the public realm on town centre streets in Barnsley.

The streets the construction firm has been appointed to work on are:

• Eldon Street

• Regent Street South

• Hanson Street

• Royal Street

• Regent Street

• Eastgate

• Market Hill

• Church Street Footpath (east).

The works include paving in natural Yorkstone and granite, new street lighting and new street furniture. Roads will also be resurfaced with improved crossing facilities provided.

Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson, Development, Environment and Culture, said: "This work continues the invigoration of the town centre. Pals Centenary Square, with its popular fountains, has been commended by the Institution of Civil Engineers, Experience Barnsley has welcomed over 100,000 visitors since it opened last July and the amount of shops leased in Barnsley town centre is still well above the national average.

"The works for the new scheme will benefit from considerable financial funding from the European Regional Development Fund programme as making these areas even more inviting will only increase the town centre appeal."

Works on site will begin in June and will continue for approximately 11 months.
