TMS Maritime Undertakes Emergency Flood Relief Work In Somerset

Construction News Image
Working with Bam Nuttall, the principle contractor, TMS Maritime has undertaken emergency flood relief work at Dunball Wharf, Bridgewater, Somerset.

The contract required immediate response to a relief programme developed to respond to unprecedented flooding of the Somerset levels, so widely published in the international news media. Hundreds of homes and many farms in the surrounding villages were overwhelmed with floodwater and overflowing foul water, following a series of heavy storms over a number of weeks.

A total of eight ultra high capacity pumps were hired from Holland by the Environment agency to move millions of cubic metres of water from the flooded land and villages into local rivers, to be carried away naturally into the Severn Estuary. Each pump can discharge 120 cu mtr per minute, achieving a total project discharge of over 57,000 cu mtrs per hour.

Project: Emergency Jetty

Client: Environment Agency

Requirement: Immediate mobilization of plant and materials to construct an emergency support for eight ultra high capacity water pumps.

Solution: One of TMS Maritime's Movax high speed piling hammers, installed sheet piles with aggregate fill, to create a fast temporary jetty, able to withstand high loads and vibration.
