Construction union UCATT have welcomed reassurances from the Health and Safety Executive that the manual handling guidance will not be merged.
UCATT was highly concerned that the guidance would be merged with the guidance on display screen equipment after the HSE undertook a joint consultation on both documents and said that “all agreed comments; views and amendments will be incorporated into a single draft revised document”.
After UCATT raised its concerns about merging the guidance describing it as "madness' the HSE confirmed that the two guidance documents "will be reviewed and treated separately".
Steve Murphy, General Secretary of UCATT, said: "We welcome the reassurance that these documents will not be merged. Proper, safe, manual handling procedures are essential for the long-term health of construction workers. Any watering down of the guidelines would be disastrous. Currently far too many companies do not comply with the regulations and it is the workers’ health that suffers."
