Balfour Beatty has been recognised as a leading supplier by its customer, the Highways Agency, at its third annual Supplier Awards recently.
The event, held in Birmingham, highlighted the contribution made by Balfour Beatty's joint venture suppliers to the Highways Agency in managing and improving England’s network of motorways and major A-roads.
The Skanska Balfour Beatty joint venture was a winner in the 'Delivering Sustainable Value and Solutions' for its achievement in reducing the energy used and carbon footprint of the junctions 16-23 and 27-30 M25 smart motorway schemes. By using 100 per cent recycled sheet piles, as well as reducing the quantity required, the team managed to cut project carbon emissions by 44,000 tonnes.
Meanwhile, Balfour Beatty's joint highway venture in Kent and Sussex was highly commended in the 'Delivering Sustainable Value and Solutions' category for a scheme to reduce water use at its Stanford Depot. This included a treatment for contaminated surface water that removed the need for underground storage tanks by treating and recycling on-site grey water leading to a reduction in demand for mains water by 20% to date.
Graham Dalton, Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, said: "It's been another successful year for our supplier recognition scheme. Yet again, large numbers of our suppliers – who are so fundamental to our business – have shown the type of innovation that will help us to be recognised as the world's leading road operator.
"We'll be looking to our supply chain to show more of this kind of good work to support the Highways Agency's journey as we significantly increase investment and customer service."
