Erewash Borough Council has granted planning permission for the two platform station between Coronation Road and Millership Way.

Work on the station is set to start in the summer − in line for opening in December 2014.

The building of the station will make it much easier for people to travel to Nottingham and journey directly from Ilkeston to Chesterfield and Sheffield.

The station development - which will include a footbridge linking the platforms and the car park, waiting shelters, ticket machines, customer information screens, passenger help points and CCTV - is a partnership between Network Rail and train operators Northern Rail and East Midlands Trains.

A new car park with around 150 spaces for cars, disabled drivers, cyclists and motorcyclists, a passenger drop off point and taxi rank will also be built.

Buses will be able to run to the station and a new bus stop will be installed.

Deputy Cabinet Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, Councillor Andy Botham, said: "This new station is long-awaited and great news for the town. It will make it much easier for everyone to get to and from Ilkeston and its surrounding towns and cities, and for local people to get to work, the shops and college."
