ISG has been awarded a £13.5 million project to construct new offices in Chelmsford for international insurer Amlin plc.
The project will enable Amlin to consolidate a number of existing office locations in Chelmsford within a single, purpose-built centre.
ISG has already carried out a complex programme of enabling works ahead of the office construction, including the systematic demolition of three buildings on Victoria Road. Much of the demolition material from these crushed structures will now be re-used across the site during the initial ground works phase.
Comprising a five-storey concrete frame building, with piled foundations and under croft parking, Amlin’s new offices will provide 100,000 sq ft of high specification majority open plan office accommodation. The fit out includes the creation of a number of glazed meeting rooms within the building and an impressive boardroom at fifth floor level. The office is targeting a Very Good BREEAM environmental rating, with high performance building materials specified throughout and roof mounted photovoltaic panels to generate electricity. Externally, the building has a contemporary design featuring extensive curtain walling and rainscreen cladding panels.
The project presents ISG with a range of logistical challenges associated with the tightly constrained nature of the site and extremely limited storage space available. The contractor will be utilising a just in time (JIT) delivery methodology for all incoming materials and will initially locate its temporary infrastructure off site, relocating once the frame of the new building is erected.
