The first families have moved in to their new home at the former Caerphilly Miners' Hospital site and have been officially welcomed by Carl Sargeant, Minister for Housing and Regeneration.
In a special ceremony, Tom Williams and Nadia Steer received the keys to their brand new home developed by housing regeneration specialist Lovell and United Welsh.
The Beeches Village is delivering 82 much needed new two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, a mixture of sale and rent, in addition to new green spaces and public areas. The mixed tenure nature of this site delivers new homes for all.
The site has been developed in close co-ordination with Caerphilly County Borough Council. It was formerly the Caerphilly Miners' Hospital, which was built in 1924 and paid for by the miners of the Rhymney Valley, South Wales, after they each put aside 6d out of their 12s 6d weekly wages. After the hospital closed in 2011 the redevelopment of the site has been shaped in close consultation with the local community.
Following the key presentation, Mr Sargeant said: "I'm delighted to welcome Tom and Nadia to this fantastic site and commend those responsible for the fantastic regeneration work which has gone on here.
"The Beeches Village has been developed without Social Housing Grant, and is a really good example of what can be achieved through income generated from a mix of housing tenure on the site – rental, Low Cost Home Ownership and open market sale.
"It's particularly pleasing that a proportion of houses on this sight will be used to help those affected by the UK Government’s welfare reform changes."
