The Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Carl Sargeant, saw for himself the good work being done by Rural Housing Enablers (RHEs) in Wales.

During a visit to Broadstone in Trellech, a development of six semi detached, sustainable properties, the Minister was keen to point to the role RHEs play in identifying and facilitating the delivery of affordable housing in rural areas.

The Minister said: "Since their introduction in 2003, RHEs have been directly responsible for the development of around 200 affordable homes in rural Wales. When you consider the difference that only a handful of houses can make to rural communities and businesses this shows the significance of what has been achieved.

"It's good to see practical examples of appropriate housing development being enabled in communities. When I launched the Positive Planning consultation package yesterday, I emphasised the need for an enabling culture in relation to the planning system.

"This scheme in Trellech is a great example of what’s possible when RHEs work with rural communities, first to identify affordable housing needs and then to lead those communities towards delivering housing in their areas."
