Balfour Beatty has recently given 40 aspiring construction project managers hands-on experience on its Aloft Hotel project where it is delivering an £18 million refurbishment of Liverpool's landmark Royal Insurance building for Ashall Property Limited, transforming the Grade II listed building into an Aloft Hotel under the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide banner.

The final year Construction Management degree students from Liverpool John Moores University were given the opportunity to study a variety of aspects of the project, including the type of refurbishment works, building condition, design, mechanical and electrical services and a site layout plan.

It was the first site visit the students have undertaken as part of their course which will see them acting as a Principal Contractor's project manager from the project feasibility study stage through to execution.

Balfour Beatty has been supporting the BEng in Building Services Engineering and BSc in Building Services courses at the university since 2005. This support is part of the infrastructure company’s programme to provide graduate opportunities to young engineers which has been run in conjunction with Liverpool Community College since 1993. The university courses include 54 weeks of full-time study with the remaining time spent learning on site.
