Domino's Pizza has always strived to stay ahead of the competition, famously introducing a delivery promise wherein an order is free is not delivered within 30 minutes and sponsoring the popular Indy 500. Now it looks like its latest venture could be in green energy as one of their outlets in New Jersey became the World’s most energy efficient restaurant.
With more than 6,500 restaurants in the World in more than 60 countries, Domino’s look set to start a process that would save the company $250m (£150m). The restaurant in New Jersey is now officially ‘the most energy efficient restaurant lighting retrofit' after refitting the entire shop with cost effective and environmentally-friendly LED lights and LED tubes. This claim has been confirmed by energy consultation experts Vanguard Energy Solutions.
Despite the initial outlay for the LED lighting, the restaurant expects to see a return of profit within 1.68 years. After this period, the restaurant will begin saving money on every energy bill. The energy consultants have confirmed that the installation will save the restaurant more than $25,000 over the life of the LED tubs, which equates to roughly $2,400 in savings every year. Lasting more than a decade, this energy efficient strategy from Domino’s can vastly decrease the replacement costs of keeping the restaurant lit.
This initial trial could see the pizza giant roll out the plan to a significant number of their 6,500 outlets which could save them hundreds of millions of dollars and have a significant, positive effect upon the environment. A happy by-product of the improved energy efficiency is the lower number of carbon emissions that are produced. Whilst a single energy efficient restaurant may not garner massive environmental benefits, a few thousands energy efficient restaurants could greatly reduce the damage that has been done to Mother Earth.
During the lifetime of the LED bulbs, should they be installed in all of Domino's outlets, an amazing 1.6million tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide emissions will be prevented. This act would be the equivalent of taking 232,000 vehicles off the road every year, massively reducing the damage that the company's operations cause the environment.
Charlie Szoradi, CEO of the company who fitted the LED tubes at the Domino’s in New Jersey is optimistic about the potential of LED lighting in revolutionising the restaurant industry and how it uses energy and the great savings that can be made. He revealed: "The massive potential quarter million dollars in cost savings across Domino's worldwide footprint is part of a global energy tipping point."
Should Domino's similarly sized competitors choose to replicate the successes of the pizza chain, the restaurant business could soon be saving billions of dollars in the coming decades. This money could be used to increase product quality, reduce prices and/or improve the wages of employees and farmers who source their ingredients.
An additional benefit of implementing intelligent LED lighting and its increased energy efficiency means that restaurants that are located in areas that suffer from inefficient lighting and are prone to blackouts will not drain as much energy from centralised power stations. This will decrease the chances of black outs and power-shortages.
As LED lighting continues to improve in terms of reliability and cost-effective production, more and more professional properties are implementing the technology. The outlay for LED improvements is now less than ever making the long-term savings of this technology more attainable and attractive to corporations. The long-term implications of large companies with a massive carbon footprint vying to be the most energy efficient will save the industry great amounts of money and will importantly, help reduce carbon emissions produced around the world.
