Health Minister Mark Drakeford has approved initial plans for the final phase of the refurbishment of Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.
The £119.8 million scheme will mark the completion of a range of major capital investments across the Merthyr and Cynon valleys in recent years. These developments were required to replace aged and failing estates and to enable Cwm Taf University Health Board to introduce modernised and responsive health service provision in an area of significant need.
The approval allows the Health Board to continue planning and to develop the Full Business Case to detail the improvements to outpatients, theatres, radiology and pathology departments, the Intensive Treatment Unit and a number of support departments.
The work on the ground and first floor of Prince Charles Hospital will result in better facilities for patients and an improved working environment for ward staff.
In addition, the scheme plans to encompass improvements to the car parking provision and also save the hospital money through energy efficiency improvements.
