Blackpool Tower Turns Green To Promote Ready To Switch Scheme

Blackpool's famous tower turned green to promote the city council-led collective energy switching scheme, Ready to Switch.

The city council is working in partnership with 12 local authorities, including Blackpool, to save residents and businesses money on their energy bills.

Ready to Switch is a free energy switching scheme that takes the hassle out of searching the market for cheaper energy deals.

A total of 5,508 energy efficient LED light bulbs on the Blackpool Tower turned green to encourage residents and businesses to sign up and save.

Since the launch last year, more than 35,000 households nationally have signed up, saving on average £110 a year on their energy bills. In Peterborough, more than 3,000 households have signed up with around two thirds offered a saving on their bill.

The household scheme uses the combined buying power of residents to negotiate cheaper prices directly with energy companies through an auction. Previous winners include British Gas and Scottish Power.

The Ready to Switch business scheme offers small to medium-sized enterprises direct access to an independent energy broker service, Make It Cheaper.

Both schemes offer free participation and there is no obligation to accept any offer made. It's quick and easy to take part; all you need is your latest energy bill, contact details and information on how much energy you use.

Councillor Nigel North, Cabinet Member for Environment Capital and Neighbourhoods, said: "A lot of people are still paying too much for their gas and electricity. People are afraid to switch; they don't have the time to compare suppliers; or think it involves a lot of hassle. That is why we organise an auction for you and take the hassle out of switching.

"We are delighted to use Blackpool Tower, an iconic landmark recognised across the country, to promote the scheme."
