The University of Bedfordshire has awarded Kier Construction a contract to build a state-of the-art teaching and learning building at the Bedford campus.

Kier won the contract following a competitive tender exercise to build the new facility, valued at some £9m.

Work at the Polhill Avenue site starts later this month, with the new building due to open in January 2015.

The University's vice chancellor, Bill Rammell, said: "I'm delighted that we have appointed local firm Kier to build our new teaching facility. It will be a major boost for the Bedford campus, marking the start of our ambitious plans to redevelop existing campus accommodation and re-landscape the site over the next five years.

"This exciting development will ensure the University continues to offer our students the very best learning experience."

Graham Howe, Kier Construction managing director for the eastern region, added: "We are thrilled to be awarded this further project for the University following on from our construction of both the Campus Centre, and the Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development Centre at the University’s Luton Campus."
