Energy Project Sees Firms Spinning With Success

A galvanizing company is celebrating success with its ongoing involvement in a major project that will generate enough energy to power almost 200,000 homes.

Humber Galvanizing, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, was called upon by fellow Hull-based engineering firm ESL (GB) to provide its specialist hot-dip galvanizing treatment to 100 tonnes of structural steel used to build part of the 300MW Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm on behalf of main contractor, Spencer Group.

The wind farm is situated just north of the Humber estuary with plans to build around 73 wind turbines on it generating enough clean, renewable energy to power up to 195,000 homes, more than one and a half times the current number of homes in Hull.

Andrew Harrison, Customer Services Manager at Humber Galvanizing, explained: "This is a fantastic project to be involved in and we're delighted to have assisted ESL in the early stages of construction of the wind farm. We look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead in seeing this fantastic project come to fruition."

The next phase of the project will commence next month where the first foundations will be installed followed by the subsea export cable which will bring the electricity from the wind farm to shore. In 2014, the offshore substation will take place with foundation installation followed by cables to the Wind Turbine Foundations, with completion scheduled for 2015.

Gareth Thompson, Construction Manager from ESL, explained: "We have worked with Humber Galvanizing on a number of projects and always find the team offer excellent customer service, through its quick turnaround, quality and price. We have designed, manufactured and installed over 100 tonnes of primary, secondary, and structural steel for the Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm and we are absolutely delighted to be working alongside main contractor Spencer Group on this project, the site staff down here are a true credit to the company."
