Blackpool Council has officially handed over the Queens Park estate to Lovell, paving the way for a new 198-home development.

Lovell will now begin the first phase of works which will include the demolition of the first two tower blocks and the creation of 92 new homes.

A ceremony commemorated the important day in the history of the estate including a presentation of the first brick laid ever at Ashworth Court to retired bricklayer, William Moore, who laid the foundation stones of the building in 1962.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council cabinet member for housing, said: "This is an important day in the history of Queens Park.

"Handing the site over to Lovell is the first step in a transformation that will affect many people's lives. We're determined to make this a success and we are sure the work is in good hands."

Lovell regeneration manager Bruce Lister said: "We are extremely excited to be working with residents, the Council and Blackpool Coastal Housing to help deliver this landmark development of high-quality contemporary homes. Our team is looking forward to starting the first phase of work on site."
