Balfour Beatty has commenced work on the £11m new George Salter Collegiate Academy.
The new Academy is one of nine schools Balfour Beatty is working on as part of the Ormiston Academy Trust’s £90 million capital build project.
The George Salter Academy will deliver around 4,000m2 of new-build and 6,700m2 of refreshed and refurbished areas over a two year programme. The new-build element will provide new English, Science and Performance Arts departments, along with a 540-seat flexible performance area and a new school entrance.
The single storey English block will be situated between two wings of the existing building, while a new science block will be built over two floors and will be connected to the new entrance area. Re-locating the entrance is designed to enhance first impressions and create a 'wow' factor for students and visitors.
All of the remaining accommodation areas dating back to the 1930s will either be refreshed or refurbished as part of the works. An extensive phasing strategy has been developed in tandem with the Academy, eliminating the need for temporary accommodation whilst keeping the Academy fully functional.
Completion of the overall scheme is programmed for spring 2015.
