The team behind the successful first phase refurbishment of Britain's oldest working theatre at Bristol Old Vic, is celebrating after being recognised as Heritage Project of the Year in the South West Built Environment Awards, organised by the Chartered Institute of Building and Constructing Excellence.

The project, completed by the Bristol office of national construction company Galliford Try, was the vision of the theatre's Artistic Director Tom Morris. Andrezj Blonksi architects were responsible for the design, while Hydrock Structures (engineering), Hoare Lea (services) and Charcoal Blue (theatre consultants) also worked on the project.

At a cost of £8m, the heritage of the Theatre was carefully restored and brought up to date to provide a more modern standard of comfort for today's theatregoers. Artisan craftsmen were employed to ensure that the building remained true to its character, having first come into operation in 1766.
