Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering recently joined 35 local businesses at Hampshire TeenTech, an event that aims to inspire children to choose a career in the Science, Technology and Engineering sectors.

During 15 minute sessions at the Balfour Beatty exhibit, approximately 300 students were given a brief introduction to piling design by the Balfour Beatty team before receiving their challenge. Using a selection of piles of varying size and length, they were asked to install foundations to support a bridge that would be stable enough to hold one of the team members weight. On completion their work was assessed for effectiveness, efficiency and of course, it was tested!

The TeenTech event specifically targets children before they start making choices for their GCSE qualifications. By providing hands on experiences and challenges the children can explore their own potential and learn more about opportunities for working in the Science, Technology and Engineering workplace.

Mark Pennington, Engineering Manager at Balfour Beatty said: "We thoroughly enjoyed our second year at the Hampshire Teen Tech event. We tested the students further this year with a more complicated engineering challenge and were impressed with their enthusiastic input. We hope we’ve attracted some budding civil engineers to the industry."
