A new play area is opening in Abbey Ward at Peverel Road, Cambridge, on Thursday 20th June.
The new play area replaces the existing one that had become worn and rundown after serving the local community for over 20 years. The Mayor, Cllr Paul Saunders will also be in attendance.
The new play design is based around an aeronautical theme that references its location on the old Marshall’s airfield. The existing pathway has been refurbished and thermoplastic graphics applied to recreate the main runway at Cambridge Airport and new landscape features have been added which from the air look like a propeller drawn by a child. New toddler equipment provided in a secure fenced area with colourful surfacing and aeroplane graphics also adds to the design theme.
For older members of the community outdoor fitness equipment has been provided along with new seating and in the near future it is intended that the space will be expanded further to include a cable zip line.
Cllr Andrea Reiner, Executive Councillor for Public Places said: "This is a large investment in the future of play for the city. Research shows that play has many benefits for children, families and the wider community, as well as improving health and quality of life. Peverel Road play area has seen a dramatic transformation of the way it once looked."
The project has been funded out of S106 developers' contributions.
