An event in Belle Vale, Liverpool, marked the start of construction work on an £8 million housing complex for older residents.

Representatives from social housing provider Riverside, housing developer Lovell and Liverpool City Council joined residents to celebrate the start of construction at the site off Childwall Valley Road.

The high-quality 70-home complex will create a range of modern, purpose-built accommodation for older residents in a landscaped setting, including 42 apartments, 14 flats for affordable rent and 12 flats and two bungalows for low-cost home ownership.

Annette Dennett, Riverside's project manager for regeneration, said: "The scheme is designed to provide high-quality housing specifically for the over-55s, from elderly supported housing, to more independent living. We don’t want it to feel like traditional old people’s homes. It will be high-quality living for people with different levels of dependence. In addition, the new homes will help to address the local demand for smaller properties for affordable rent, as well as low-cost home ownership."

The new housing is set to be completed in December 2014.
