The £3.1m creation of Leeds Jewish Free School in Alwoodley has been given the go ahead with the announcement that planning permission for the development has been granted.

Plans for the scheme were subsequently showcased at an open evening for parents and pupils, hosted by the Directors of Leeds Jewish Free School and the project's main contractor, Wates Construction.

The work will see the creation of the country's first Jewish Secondary Free School, which will open adjacent to the existing Brodetsky Primary School on Wentworth Avenue. The new facility will provide 175 secondary school places for Years 7 to 13.

Wates is set to begin work on the new 1,044 sq m scheme later this month, with work also including the refurbishment of the existing 1,102 sq m Brodetsky school building.

Designed by Watson Batty, the new facility will include open-plan teaching spaces and the conversion of an external courtyard area into an internal Learning Resource Centre. Features also include a drama studio, food technology classroom and upgraded ICT provision.

Completion of the project is scheduled for February 2014 and the school will be fully operational throughout construction. The curriculum will be delivered by staff from the Rodillian Academy via a unique collaborative teaching arrangement.
