Mansell has completed Maggies North East Cancer Care Centre in Newcastle.
Designed by designers Edward Cullinan Architects, the centre provides a landmark building within the grounds of the Freeman Hospital and is also highly sustainable. Bespoke design features have been used to achieve the highest BREEAM rating. Thin-film photovoltaic panels have been incorporated into a dramatic concave curved roof, which shelters a mezzanine level that leads out onto a flat landscaped roof for patient recreation.
The centre's exposed concrete frame has been covered in natural landscaping embankments and weathered steel panels, integrating it into the vibrant landscaping which surrounds the building.
A partially enclosed courtyard leads into two wings of accommodation with counselling rooms, library, large living room and kitchen area.
Eddie Tribe Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's North East delivery unit, said: "It has been a privilege to help deliver a scheme that will provide vital support for those suffering with and affected by cancer. Through attention to detail and creative design, a highly sustainable and truly unique space has been created at Maggie's North East."
