A proposed redevelopment of the Elliott's Field Retail Park, which would see a Debenhams open in Rugby, has been approved by Rugby Borough Council's planning committee.
The way is now clear for the developers to start work on the site, subject to some routine conditions, and the new stores could be open and trading by 2015.
Cllr Heather Timms, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for economy, development and culture, said: "I am pleased that all of the planning committee members saw the benefits of this development. It will bring a significant investment into the town that will help to make sure that our residents will have the opportunity to buy premium goods within the borough, and without having to travel to rivals in Coventry, Leamington or Leicester.
"A major department store such as Debenhams will compliment our thriving independent traders in the town centre, and will benefit the whole town.
"I do hope that the plans we have recently seen for development and much needed refurbishment of the Clock Towers shopping centre will also be brought forward, and I look forward to seeing a planning application soon."
