British Gas employees have been recognised for their fundraising and contribution to their local community, as British Gas won the Business of the Year award at the Third Sector Business Charity Awards 2013.

The judges singled out British Gas for the top prize for its work with a range of charities including Shelter, Great Ormond Street Hospital and for its work in helping in local communities.

In 2012, British Gas and its employees raised £750,000 for Great Ormond Street by undertaking a gruelling 760 mile bike ride over nine days taking in British Gas sites from Uddingston to Windsor.

Ian Peters, Managing Director of Residential Energy at British Gas, said: "As an energy company, we have a big responsibility to help the households and the communities where we work and operate.

"Whether it's improving Britain’s homes in the private rental sector with Shelter, raising millions of pounds for Great Ormond Street or working with local charities around Britain, we’re making a real difference to people's lives.
