Work is set to get under way on a major new development that will deliver homes, employment, leisure space and a new primary school in Crawley's new 'North East Sector'.

Infrastructure work is planned to begin this summer for the neighbourhood centre on the site bordered by Crawley Avenue, Balcombe Road, Steers Lane and Tinsley Green. A consortium of Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon Homes, Crawley Borough Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) is the driving force behind the project, which has outline planning permission for 1,900 new homes, 40 per cent of which will be affordable housing.

Developers Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon recently secured detailed planning approval to construct the infrastructure for the first phase of residential development which will include a neighbourhood centre, new primary school, retail, and community and health facilities, all for public use.

The consortium is currently finalising detailed plans for the first phase of homes, which will be submitted as a reserved matters planning application to Crawley Borough Council in due course. It is anticipated construction of the first homes will commence in 2014, subject to planning approval.
