Doncaster Council's Civic Office has been named 'Winner of Winners' at the LABC Building Excellence Awards, the latest in a line of accolades for the flagship building.
The project, which reached completion in October last year, also received the 'Commercial Building over £1m' award at the LABC's annual South Yorkshire and Humber awards ceremony, which was held on 2 May.
The five-storey building was designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects and was delivered by Wates Construction on behalf of Doncaster Council and its development partner, Muse Developments. The project forms part of the first phase of the council’s £300m Civic and Cultural Quarter (CCQ).
The recent victory follows the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards last October, at which Doncaster Civic Offices was named 'Project of the Year'.
Delivered at £1,300 per sq m, the now occupied Civic Office building provides flexible office space for 1,600 council staff and has enabled the authority to merge much of its estate under one roof. The development also includes an adjoining one-stop-shop for council services.
A highly sustainable building, the new scheme has achieves a BREEAM Excellent rating and is expected to save £650,000 per year in the council’s operational costs.
Throughout construction, the council and Wates worked collaboratively to ensure local suppliers were engaged in the work, resulting in the appointment of £1.5m worth of contracts awarded to Doncaster sub-contractors.
During the peak construction period one third of the site workforce were from Doncaster and the surrounding borough, while Wates utilised the project to create opportunities for a business administration apprentice and two trainee positions for local young people.
