A major scheme to improve the A23 between Handcross and Warninglid in West Sussex reaches a new milestone this week.
Work will begin to widen the northbound carriageway on the section between Slaugham and Handcross.
This follows work to temporarily widen the southbound carriageway, as well as the completion of access tracks and environmental work. To enable the new section of work to begin, the northbound carriageway will be closed overnight tonight to allow the northbound traffic to be moved over onto the southbound carriageway between Slaugham and Handcross. The narrow lanes and 40mph speed limit which have been in operation since the scheme began will remain in place.
Chris Bacon, Highways Agency Project Manager said: "This major improvement remains on schedule for completion in Autumn 2014 and we recently reopened the improved junction at Warninglid. From next week we will be able to carry out work on the northbound carriageway free of traffic, and carry out strengthening work on the bridge that carries the northbound A23 over Staplefield Road.
"We've planned the whole project very carefully to keep traffic moving while we carry out the work, and minimise disruption, and the northbound closure on Monday night to allow us to move traffic from one carriageway to another is being done overnight when traffic flows are lowest."
