Torness power station's new apprentices enjoyed an open day at the station before setting off to HMS Sultan, a world-class training centre in Portsmouth.

The six apprentices and their parents had a site tour and information session at Torness. Ronnie Yule, Torness's maintenance manager, told them about how the station works and what it is like to be an EDF Energy apprentice. They will join apprentices from all of EDF Energy's Existing Nuclear sites at HMS Sultan in September. They will be there for the first two years of the four-year scheme, and will return for on-site training for the final two years.

Dominic Blythe, apprentice co-ordinator, said: "This is the sixth group that we are sending down to HMS Sultan. The feedback we have got so far is very, very positive."

Earlier this year the recruitment process started with the stations receiving 100s of applications.

Torness's latest apprentices, who come from East Lothian, Berwickshire and even Inverness, will tackle engineering training and also life skills at HMS Sultan. Away from the classroom the apprentices will enjoy excellent sports and leisure facilities under the watchful eye of the centre’s own team.
